I know that when someone mentions Valentine's Day your immediate reaction isn't going to be to think 'granddaughter!', but I want to share a special story with you that might change your mind on who you spoil on cupid's holiday. Why is Valentine's Day the perfect day to think of granddaughters?I'm not going to lie - my relationship with my grandpa changed dramatically when I entered my 20's. It is far too complicated, and deep, to get into. I went from being over at my grandparent's apartment every single weekend to not being on speaking terms with my grandpa when he passed away. And for everything that had happened and all that we had gone through, he still holds a special place in my heart. Maybe it was that we each put genuine effort into trying to mend the relationship or maybe it was all those earlier years of sharing such a close bond, who knows. What I do know is that when I was designing my collection of Valentine's Day gifts it was important to me to include specific gifts for a granddaughter from a grandpa. Why? Why on earth would that be so important to me after you just read that I wasn't even speaking to my grandpa when he died? Let me tell you... A gift from grandpa...I honestly couldn't tell you if this gift was given every single year on February 14th or it was just hit or miss. What I can tell you is that this tiny moment in my history, that took my grandpa all of 10 minutes and only a few dollars, made such a positive memory for me that I'm still smiling about it in my 30s.
Do you remember Love's Baby Soft perfume? Walgreens used to sell it in this little gift set ready to give on Valentine's Day. Yep, that was it. My grandpa used to give the granddaughters each their own little set of Love's Baby Soft perfume. If someone ever asked me to describe what Valentine's Day smelled like to me I would, without hesitation, respond with ' baby powder'. So I want you to think about this - if something like that could still with me throughout my entire life imagine how special a personal keepsake would have made me feel. Consider sending your granddaughter a meaningful keepsake, a card in the mail, or a box of chocolates in person. Make her feel as special as I did growing up and let her know that no matter what life throws your way, the two of you will share an unbreakable bond. xx jen
